A ChessBase Scottish Grand Prix Event



1. Premier - Open
The event will be FIDE Rated. All entrants must be a member of a National Chess Association. The East of Scotland Championship Trophy and £100 prize will be awarded to the highest eligible player in the Premier.

2. Major - Grading limit 1900/172

3. Bishops - Grading limit 1600/142

4. Knights - Grading limit 1400/122

Additional Prizes:
Giant Killing, Best Game, and Most Entertaining Game - £50 for each prize

Edinburgh Evening News Cup - This will be presented to the highest placed junior, in the Premier, under 18 on the 5th April 2019 normally resident in Scotland. A prize of £50 will also be awarded.

Group Entries - to encourage chess clubs a Group Discount will be given; when 6 entries are received together only pay for 5 entries.

Discounts (All events)

A discount of £2 is given if one of the following categories applies:
Over 60, unemployed, school pupil or full time student, or a member of any National Chess Association.

GMs and IMs will be given free entry.

Juniors receiving free school meals can make a request to David Stewart for free entry.

Late Entry Fee

Entries received, or payment made, after 3rd April will be charged an extra £2.00.

Time Controls

All Events: 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment per move.

  • Friday, Round 1 - 18.30 to 22.30
  • Saturday, Round 2 - 10.00 to 14.00
  • Saturday, Round 3 - 15.00 to 19.00
  • Sunday, Round 4 - 10.00 to 14.00
  • Sunday, Round 5 - 15.00 to 19.00

Prize Giving will be at 19.30 approximately


The Congress Director has the right to make any changes that are necessary to ensure a successful Congress. Arbiters’ decisions on matters of play are final.

Smoking is prohibited in the School and its grounds.

Mobile telephones and all electronic devices must be switched off in the playing areas!

Coaching Sessions

Saturday and Sunday 6 & 7 April 2019

Free Coaching sessions organised by Sean Marsh of Chess in Schools and Communities are to be offered at the Edinburgh Congress. Ideal for anyone thinking of being involved with a School Chess Club, such as a parent or teacher.

Sessions start at 10.30 am and 3.30 pm on both days and can be booked in advance via David Stewart.
