Minutes of Special Council Meeting 29/9/2022

2022-10-12

Minutes of the Special Chess Edinburgh Council Meeting held at the
Edinburgh Chess Club, 1 Alva Street, Edinburgh on Thursday 29th September 2022 at 19.30.

Present.
David Stewart (Chair), Dave Watson, Calum McGillivray, Martin Robinson and Peter Woollven.

Apologies for Absence
Crawford Macnab, Jim O’Neil, Stewart Good and Chihon Ley.

1. David Stewart welcomed Peter Woollven to the Council and reminded everyone that the sole purpose of the meeting was to decide on the structure of the Leagues for the new season.

2. Allegro League
David Stewart reported that 10 teams had wanted to enter the Allegro League but, as no-one had come forward to be the organiser, it was agreed that the League would not run this season. It is hoped that someone can be found to take it on for 2023/2024.

3. Edinburgh Chess League 2022/2023
David Stewart reported that 12 clubs had responded to his letter with a total of 27 teams put forward for inclusion in the leagues.

However, this included two teams from Sandy Bells and as yet they do not have any premises suitable for playing league matches. Although they are still trying to find premises the Council felt it needed to discuss possible eventualities. It is thought that Sandy Bells might approach the Edinburgh Club to use their premises and the Council would have no objection to that, although it would be up to the Edinburgh Club to decide if they could accommodate them and on what terms. In the event that Sandy Bells ask to play all their league matches as away matches, the Council decided that this would be permissible but, for this season only. This would only be allowed because of the exceptional circumstances facing clubs in the recovery from the pandemic and it would not be seen as setting a precedent. It may be that Sandy Bells would not be in a position to arrange their matches at the fixtures meeting and the League Secretary, Calum McGillivray will take this into account when drawing up the fixtures.,

The loss of six teams from the 2019/20 leagues necessitated a restructuring of the leagues and the meeting then decided that there would be three leagues of 6 teams and one of nine teams. The teams in the top three divisions will play each other twice and in the bottom division once only.
