Report

The Allegro League was won this year by Balerno with a Board Score of 44 (79%) achieved by winning 11 matches drawing 2 and losing once to Civil Service. Second were Edinburgh with a Board Score of 35.5 (63%). Considering the substantial difference between champions and runners up it is not surprising that Balerno players feature prominently in the list of individual board winners.

Board 1 - Chris McIntee (Balerno) 11

Board 2 - Jonathon Edwards (Balerno) 11.5

Board 3 - Brian Duncan (Sandy Bells) 8

Board 4 - David Watt (Balerno) 12

It was disappointing that Civil Service defaulted on two nights and have indicated that they will not enter a team next season. With 10 teams in the league each playing 7 opponents over seven nights cancellation of the Civil Service results would have resulted in two teams playing two more matches than the others. The League rules state that scoring is on game points scored implying all teams playing the same number of matches. It would be prudent to consider percentage scores if this situation arose again. On this occasion cancellation of the Civil Service results would have merely increased the gap between the first and second teams going into the final night and only made one minor change to the other placings. It was therefore decided to encourage them to complete the season.
I have suggested to Civil Service that they consider entering a composite team next season with another club who are not in the league at present.
