Chandler Cornered

Scottish Chess Championship 2009 (the Intro)

Saturday 11 July To Sunday 19 July at the City Chambers, Edinburgh.

I've interviewed some of the key players prior to this event.

The White King's Bishop.

Here he is sitting proudly on c4.

How do you think you wiil fare in the Scottish Championship?

"I have seen the field and expect to be developed on b5,d3, e2 or g2.
There are no classical players so I doubt if you will see 2.Bc4.
The Bishop's Opening. It's named after me don't you know."

Don't you like being the Lopez Bishop?

"I hate it. If I'm not getting exchanged for a smelly Knight on c6
I'm being chased all over the Queenside by the a & b-pawns. "

Can you recall a game you enjoyed in the Scottish?

"I remember this one, though I was not there at the end. I hit f7 from c4
just like I use to do in the good old days and then gave a discovered check."

Ian Mullen - Eddie Davis, Scottish Championship, Troon 1980.

I.Mullen - E.Davis

1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nc3 c6 4.Nf3 d6 5.h3 Nd7 6.Bd3 e5 7.dxe5 dxe5 8.Be3 Qc7 9.0-0 Ne7 10.a4 a5 11.Bc4 0-0 12.Qd2 b6 13.Rad1 Nf6 14.Qd6 Qxd6 15.Rxd6 Ne8 16.Rd8 c5 17.Ng5 Nc7 18.Bxf7+ Kh8 19.Rxf8+ Bxf8 20.Bc4 Kg7 21.f4 h6 22.fxe5 Ba6 23.Rf7+ Kg8 24.Rxe7+ Bxc4 25.Rxc7 hxg5 26.Nd5

Black will have to play 26...Bxd5 27.exd5 and the united passed pawns rule.

I also found the Black c-pawn wandering around the tournament hall.

Here he is sitting on c7.

"Hi. Looking forward to the tournament."

"You have to be kidding. I'm a c-pawn and this lot are Sicilian experts.
I see 1.e4 and before you can say 'play the Pirc' I'm on c5. two moves later I'm off the board."

It's not that bad, the are some French experts here.

"Big deal. I still hit c5 to undermine the centre and play cxd4.
It's a waste of time me being here. I never get to see a middle game."

He looked like he needed cheering up so I took him to see the Edinburgh sights.

We saw Greyfriars Bobby.

Watched a street entertainer.

He met the White King.

We had a pint in Bells.

Then back to my place for a game of Chess

G.Chandler - The Black C Pawn, Edinburgh 2009.

G.Chandler - C Pawn

1.e4 c5 2.Qf3 c4 3.b3 cxb3 4.Bc4 bxc2 5.Qxf7

He then complained that the game was unfair, as being a c-pawn meant
he could only move the c-pawn. So before he fell back into a bad mood
we had another game.

G.Chandler - The Black C Pawn, Edinburgh 2009.

G.Chandler - C Pawn

1.c3 c5 2.b4 cxb4 3.Bb2 bxc3 4.Qc2 cxb2 5.Qc1 bxc1Q

That cheered him up.

As usual I'll be putting up the Blunder/Swindle prize.
The bad news is that I've been laid off since March so money is a slight issue.
So this year the player who makes what I consider to be the worst move of the
whole congress will win The Chandler Howler Trophy and 5.00.
