The Bike Ride + The Simul + Crazy Chess

Whilst the rest of us were laying in our stinking pits
on Sunday morning the 14th. September. Craig Pritchett, Mike Scott,
Johnny Scott and Phil, Cathy, Adam and Leora Wadler were up and cycling
from Glasgow to Edinburgh (50 miles) to raise money for
Scottish Junior Chess Association Educational Trust.

Upon arriving at the Edinburgh Chess Club, Craig took a sip
of water and then dived into a simultaneous display against
11 of Scotland Juniors.

The final score is a bit shady because when Craig won a game
he allowed the player to set up the bits for another game.
I think it ended P21.W19. D1. L1.

I did get back half a dozen score sheets but only one has the
full score with no mistakes. The game Craig lost. (sorry Craig).

Here is the game. This was second between the players.
Craig winning the first.

S.Murdochy - C.Pritchett

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 e6 4.Nc3 exd5 5.cxd5 d6 6.e4 g6 7.f4 Bg7 8.Bb5+ Nfd7 9.a4 0-0 10.Nf3 Na6 11.0-0 Nb4 12.Be3 a6 13.Bc4 Nb6 14.Bb3 c4 15.Bc2 Nxc2 16.Qxc2 Bg4 17.Qf2 Bxf3 18.Bxb6 Qe7 19.Qxf3 Rae8 20.Rfe1 f5 21.exf5 Qxe1+ 22.Rxe1 Rxe1+ 23.Kf2 Re7 24.fxg6 hxg6 25.Qg4 Kh7 26.Qh4+

Craig did look a bit tired towards the end of the display.
No wonder. I'm younget than Craig and I could not cycle 5 miles
and play a game of chess. Never mind 50 miles.

For more information about this event and the
organisation in general you should visit:

Scottish Junior Chess Association Educational Trust

Neil Berry who played in a recent tournament in Riga attended the simul.
He lent me this:

This an Estonian 5Kr note showing a picture of Paul Keres.
Apparently it is the only bank note in the world to show a chess player.

We should have the top Scottish players on our currency.
20 = Jonathan Rowson
10 = Jacob Aagaard
5 = Colin McNab

and Keith Ruxton gets the 9 bob note.
Speaking of mucker Ruxton. Keith won the recent Grangemouth tournament.
Here he is celebrating with the Tournament Shield in Sandy Bells.

(That wierdo on the left is Gaffin Austin. I bet he cannot remember being there).

Chess Blindness
Came across the following game on RedHotPawn.
But first here is most likely the most famous mating
pattern of all. White to play and mate in 5.

1.Qd5+ Kh8 2.Nf7+ Kg8 3.Nh6+ Kh8 4.Qg8+ Rxg8 5.Nf7 mate
It's so easy to see (once you know it) that I'm sure 99% of
the regulars here could do it blindfold.

Everyone knows it.
Play over this game. (look out for a Black shot - more about this later).

Paul Gowder - Somebod

1.e4 e5 2.f4 d6 3.Nf3 Bg4 4.Bc4 Nf6 5.d3 Nc6 6.c3 Na5 7.Nbd2 Nxc4 8.Nxc4 Be7 9.fxe5 dxe5 10.Ncxe5 Bxf3 11.Nxf3 0-0 12.0-0 Bc5+ 13.d4 Bb6 14.e5 Nd5 15.Bg5 f6 16.exf6 Nxf6 17.Bxf6 Rxf6 18.Ne5 Rxf1+ 19.Qxf1 Qf8 20.Qc4+ Kh8 21.Nf7+ Kg8 22.Nh6+ Kh8 23.Qg8+

Now White suddenly realised it was not Philidor's Legacy.
It was Philidor's Nightmare. Quite amusing.
It's what you call playing by rote.

OK did you spot the shot?
In this position Black had the chance to kick back.

Black should have played 19....Bxd4+ 20.cxd4 Qxd4+ 21.Kh1 Qxe5.
The attack is over and Black is a pawn up.

When this opportunity presents itself it must be grabbed.
Always be on the look out for tricks when the f-pawn has advanced
and White has not tucked the King away onto h1.

Here is a an effort of mine from a 4 minute game.
Watch me pull out a trick involving this tactic. Twice!

Bklyn - G.Chandler

10.Nd2 Re8 11.fxe5 dxe5 12.Ne4 Nxe4 13.Bxe4 exd4 14.exd4 Nxd4 15.Rd3 Qe7 16.cxd4 Qxe4 17.Qxe4 Rxe4 18.Be3 Rxe3 19.Rxe3 Bxd4 20.Kf2 Re8 21.Rae1 Rxe3 22.Rxe3 f5 23.Kf3 Bxe3 24.Kxe3 Kf7 25.Kf4 Kf6 26.b4 g5+

And White resigned before I could demonstrate my endgame skill (Thank God).

I've been put onto this.

You will find it at:

Crazy Chess

It's like Space Invaders. You have a Knight (that moves like a Knight)
Pawns comes down the board and you have to take them.
You can also take 'power ups' 'extra lives'.
Sounds simple? DON'T GO THERE It's totally addictive.
